Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes the footballer of the year awards should only go to players who help their club win the league.

Gareth Bale won the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year award last term, as well as the Football Writers’ trophy, after a number of superb performances for Tottenham.

But Spurs finished fifth, 17 points behind champions Manchester United and also fell short in the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard, who is his club’s leading scorer this season, is in the running for the honours this time although the favourite is Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, who is the top scorer in the Premier League.

“Individual awards should be for the winners,” said Mourinho. “Last year, it happened to Gareth and not to a Manchester United player because Gareth was more than special.

“He had a fabulous season but normally individual awards are a consequence of a collective work, a team big award, which means winning the competitions.
