David Moyes singled out Rio Ferdinand for special praise after the defender’s second-half display helped earn Manchester United a goalless draw at Arsenal.

The veteran centre-half was brought on at half-time for the concussed Rafael and helped keep the Gunners at bay alongside Nemanja Vidic.

It was just the 35-year-old’s eighth Premier League appearance of the season – but Moyes was delighted by the defender’s performance.

Well done to Rio as it’s never easy coming on at half-time

“I have to say I thought Rio came on and did great,” said Moyes.

“I thought he and Nemanja Vidic showed experience in the second half. They were composed when they had to be and at the times they needed to be as well.

“So well done to Rio as it’s never easy coming on at half-time especially in a game like this.”

“We ended up putting on young Adnan Januzaj in the end in the hope that it might have an impact with 15 to 20 minutes to go.

“But we did need that experience [of Ferdinand and Vidic] when we were finding it hard to get into the game. I have to say the boys at the back did a great job.
