GLEN JOHNSON CAN EARN NEW LIVERPOOL CONTRACT, SAYS BRENDAN RODGERS

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson could still earn a new contract at the club, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

The England international will enter the final years of his current deal this summer and turn 30 in August. It was widely thought that Johnson’s £110,000-a-week wages would be prohibitive to a new contract at Anfield, but that’s not necessarily the case, says Rodgers.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “Glen is a player we want to keep.

“In terms of his contract, I am sure that is something that will be discussed between now and the end of the season.

“I think Steven Gerrard went down to the last year of his contract last summer before that was sorted.

“I’m sure it’s something the owners will take up when the time is right. At this moment in time I am only really concentrating on the football aspect.”

It had been suggested that the Reds might cash-in on Johnson by selling him this summer. Rodgers has instead challenged him to earn a new deal with his performances in the last few months of the current campaign.
