Horrific scenes of unmistakeable racism were seen in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday night.

Peruvian outfit Real Garcilaso collected a 2-1 win over Brazilian club Cruzeiro, however the scoreline was arguably only the second major talking event after the game.

Tinga, the 36-year-old Brazilian legend who played 99 games for Borussia Dortmund as well as getting four Brazil caps in his ongoing 17-year career, was subjected to unacceptable monkey noises from the home fans when he came off the bench midway through the second half.

After the match Tinga vented about the deplorable treatment he suffered:

I played four years in Germany and that never happened to me, now happens in a country like ours which has such diverse races in it. We need to change for racial equality and respect.

At the beginning I thought the screams were because of the Copa Libertadores match, but then I realised it was racism.

Meanwhile, the sporting director of Cruzeiro, Alexandre Mattos, also fired back at the Real Garcilaso crowd after the game:

What they did to Tinga were the actions of cowards. He is a human being, this was a setback for humanity. This should not exist in football.
