Roberto, who has been on loan from the Liga side since the summer, has signed a four-year deal with the UEFA Champions League round of 16 contenders. Ever present in the Piraeus outfit's group stage campaign, Roberto has joined for a fee reported to be in the region of €6m. The transfer was confirmed by Olympiacos midway through Wednesday's Greek Super League game against Panionios GSS, with an official statement subsequently released on the club's website.

"They caught me by surprise," said the 27-year-old. "I didn't expect it but I loved having the announcement in the stadium with the fans chanting my name. I am very happy to extend my stay at Olympiacos." Coach Míchel added: "The permanent signing of Roberto is great news. To have a goalkeeper of his calibre in our team is very important – that's why the fans celebrated the news just as much as our [2-0] victory."

Manchester United FC manager David Moyes was in attendance for the Panionios fixture and will be back with his side for the first leg of their last-16 meeting on 25 February.
