Rooney Praises United Performance

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has praised his side’s convincing performance as they beat struggling West Bromich Albion 3-0 at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Rooney scored United’s second as they put their disappointing defeat to Olympiakos in the Champions League behind them and ensured they are still firmly in a fight for a top five finish.

Speaking after the win, Rooney praised the team’s ability to keep fighting following a poor season under David Moyes thus far and said they could have won by more than three goals, the Express reports.

"We were hurt after losing to Olympiakos and we wanted to come and show everyone we're a good team.

"We'll fight for our shirt and for our place in the team. We played with great energy and we always looked a threat. The goals were well deserved and there maybe could have been more.

"We were not able to get forward sometimes in the first half and we had to fight through that.

"But we got the goal thankfully from Phil Jones and went in at half-time and knew we had to finish the game off. So to get the second was great and I think we saw the game off then quite well."

Rooney become the first player in Premier League history to make double figures for both assists and goals five years in a row.

Next up for United and Rooney is the return leg at home to Olympiakos in the Champions League, with the reigning Premier League champions needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit to progress to the quarter-finals.
