Tottenham’s Walker a major doubt for World Cup

England boss Roy Hodgson announces his 23-man selection on Monday, and national team doctors have visited Tottenham to check on Walker’s progress, with the defender having not played since March due to a pelvic injury, and he is already confirmed to miss the club’s final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa, which takes place on Sunday.

Hodgson must decide whether to take a chance on Walker’s fitness, and Tottenham Head Coach Tim Sherwood admitted that he has missed training throughout the week. “We’ve put it into the hands of the England medical team now, so it’s up to them to assess,” he said.

“I suppose Roy is going to look at the options that he has got and see if he wants to give Kyle that sort of time to get himself ready. But he is obviously a top right-back and one of the best in the country. No. I have no idea when he might be ready to return because I’m just worried about our game on Sunday.”

Should Walker not be risked, Phil Jones or Chris Smalling is likely to act as second-choice right-back in Brazil behind Glen Johnson.
