Michael Dawson has hailed the return of Jan Vertonghen to the Tottenham side, describing his central defensive colleague as “world class.” The Belgian defender has been viewed as a key component in Spurs’ Champions League charge.

Vertonghen had missed two months of action after picking up an ankle injury in the victory over Fulham at the beginning of December, with Spurs conceding five goals on two occasions while the Belgian was sidelined.

Dawson is pleased to see Vertonghen back in action and hopes that a player of his quality can be a catalyst for Spurs hopes of finishing in the top four.

Dawson said, “It’s always good to have players back. We’ve the Europa league starting again soon as well, so there are plenty of games.

“Jan, for me, is a genuinely world class player. He’s cultured on the ball and a top defender as well.

“We’ve got top players who want to play, so competition is high and you know you have to perform well to stay in the team.

“We all want the game time and we’re all pushing each other.”

Spurs also have Younes Kaboul back in action after another lengthy lay-off for the Frenchman, while Andros Townsend is also back in contention after his recent hamstring troubles.
