Javier Zanetti

The Italian, who turns 41 in August, is reportedly to be offered a chance at a one-year playing contract next season with a view to move into a coaching position in 2015.

Zanetti’s current contract will expire in the summer and whilst his future is not yet sorted the Chelsea boss is believed to be waiting to see how the situation unfolds.

The Inter man is expected to hold talks with the club’s president Erick Thohir regarding his future at the club and whether he will remain in Italy or seek pastures new.

Speaking about Zanetti, the Portuguese said: “To me Zanetti represents the joy of living, the joy of making football your job every morning. He is the smile, the life force, the passion for training, the good cheer for everyone who works with him.”

The Argentinean veteran has been at Inter since 1995 and previously worked under Mourinho when he managed the club in 2010, a side Zanetti captained to Champions League success.

The move for the versatile defender could yet be stopped my owner Roman Abramovic as the club’s policy on outfield players is that players over 30 can only receive one-year deals in a bid to keep the club’s average age down.
