BENFICA BOSS JORGE JESUS’ NONSENSICAL EXCUSE FOR WINDING UP SPURS MANAGER TIM SHERWOOD

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus has rejected suggestions that he mocked Spurs counterpart Tim Sherwood by gesturing the scoreline towards him.

The Portuguese boss said his three-fingered salute was actually a tribute to the shirt number of goalscorer Luisao.

He said: “I was saying ‘number three, Luisao. Number three.’

“That’s Sherwood’s problem if he felt annoyed.”

All well and good, except that Luisao wears the number four on the back of his shirt.

Sherwood was furious over the gesture and squared up to his opposite number on the touchline. He also discussed the incident in his post-match press conference.
