Premier League preview: Southampton welcome Everton to St Mary's

Mauricio Pochettino: Wins and goals have started to dry up for Southampton

Southampton are limping towards the finishing post and will want to get back on track against top-four hopefuls Everton.

Mauricio Pochettino's side appear destined to end the campaign inside the top-half of the table, but will be eager to ensure that their campaign does not fizzle out.

It promised so much early on, with a flying start sparking talk of a possible top-four push and a return to European competition.

Maintaining those standards has proved tricky, but an eighth-place finish would represent a positive step in the right direction.

No win in three, and only one goal scored during that run, suggests there is work to be done if that target is to be hit, but Southampton certainly have the talent at their disposal to end on a high.

Everton, though, will make the long journey to the south coast on Saturday lunchtime determined to keep their opponents waiting on a return to winning ways.

With Arsenal not in action until Monday, a trip to St Mary's Stadium offers Roberto Martinez's men an opportunity to clamber back into the UEFA Champions League places.

They sit one point adrift of Arsenal at present, with eight wins in nine keeping them very much in the race for a seat at European football's top table.

The most recent of those successes came against Manchester United last weekend, with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park raising morale within the camp and costing David Moyes his job.
