José Mourinho feels as if he isn’t respected in English football, according to Chelsea legend Pat Nevin.

The Blues manager is facing an FA charge of improper conduct after he sarcastically described match official Mike Dean’s performance as “unbelievable” after the 2-1 loss to Sunderland.

He feels there is antagonism towards Chelsea and him in the media. He may be imagining it but that’s how he feels

Earlier this month, Mourinho received an £8,000 fine and a warning over his future conduct after confronting referee Chris Foy during Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in March.

And former Chelsea midfielder Nevin reckons Mourinho’s recent caginess is down to the 51-year-old feeling that he and Chelsea don’t get enough respect in the Premier League.

“I don’t think he feels as if he is respected,” Nevin told Newstalk.

“He loves and gets a warm feeling about English football. He loves the passion of English football. He goes away and does brilliantly in Italy and fairly well in Spain.

“He thinks the home of exciting football is England. He did very well in his first period and he thought he would come back. He was almost lauded as a guy who wins everything.

“Almost from the moment he came back, he didn’t behave perfectly all the time, but there is certainly an antipathy towards Chelsea – full stop.

“If anything does go wrong with Chelsea, the brickbats are out battering them all over the place.

“There have been a number of occasions this season, particularly the Aston Villa match, that sticks in his throat quite a lot.”

He added: “He feels there is antagonism towards Chelsea and him in the media. He may be imagining it but that’s how he feels.”
