Everton pressed once more for a goal, but were again frustrated by Marshall who made a brilliant stop from Lukaku with the clock ticking down.

When asked whether he was disappointed that Rooney had elected to sign a new long-term contract with United, he replied: "I don’t react. We did show an interest in the past. It doesn’t bother me at all."

Mourinho could not even be prompted to speak at any real length about Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea at Everton this season.

"I don’t speak about Romelu Lukaku until the end of the season," he insisted. "Until then he is an Everton player. He is our player but I prefer to see him as an Everton player for now."

Yet despite his apparent unwillingness to comment on any issue, the Chelsea boss insisted he was not unhappy and had not taken a vow of silence.

Chelsea defender John Terry will return to action this weekend after recovering from a muscle strain.

The Blues captain has missed Chelsea's last three games due to injury but is expected to shake off the knock in time to face Everton this weekend.

How does qualification work?

Matches will be spread over several days during the usual international breaks, with games being played on each day between the Thursday and Tuesday. Teams with two fixtures will play either Thursday-Sunday, Friday-Monday or Saturday-Tuesday. The initiative is designed to allow fans to watch more matches, and, of course, to increase the value of television rights by making more matches available.

Who are England hoping to draw?

England are among the top seeds alongside holders Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Roy Hodgson will be eager to avoid the likes of Turkey and Serbia, both tough draws from Pot 3, while hoping Pot 2 offers up one of its relatively easier ties in Switzerland or Hungary. Belgium look the best of Pot 2 and will be a long way from Hodgson's wishlist.

Who will Scotland and Wales hope to be paired with?

Scotland and Wales are both in Pot 4 and need friendly draws in order to have a realistic hope of qualifying. Drawing Greece or Bosnia-Herzegovina would be a good result from Pot 1, while further down the main priority will be to avoid long and difficult away trips, making the likes of Cyprus (Pot 5) and Luxembourg (Pot 6) infinitely preferable to Azerbaijan (Pot 5) and Kazakhstan (Pot 6).

Who might Northern Ireland face?

Northern Ireland are in Pot 5 and would need a string of shocks to be in contention. A victory over Russia and a draw with Portugal highlighted their World Cup qualifiers, and so, if Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina are out of reach from Pot 1, they might be next on Michael O'Neill's wishlist.

Who do the Republic of Ireland need to avoid?

Seeded in Pot 2, Ireland are in a good position to make a run at qualification, but must improve on their World Cup qualifying campaign as new-look management combo Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane make their mark. Austria, in Pot 3, took four points off Ireland in the World Cup qualifiers and might be best avoided.

Why are hosts France playing in the qualifiers?

France are assured of their place in the finals, but have been placed in Group I where no points will be awarded for their matches. UEFA has made the change recognising host nations can struggle to arrange suitable friendlies while others focus on qualification.

Are there any other restrictions on the draw?

England, Germany, Italy, Spain and Holland must all be placed in one of the six-team groups under the terms of UEFA's television rights contracts. Newcomers Gibraltar will not be allowed to play Spain for political reasons, while Azerbaijan will also be kept away from Armenia.

Swansea City head coach Garry Monk has questioned former manager Michael Laudrup's decision to hold a press conference to discuss his exit.

The Dane, who was replaced by Monk earlier this month, met with journalists on Tuesday and spoke at length about the sequence of events that led to his departure.

However, when pushed for details, Laudrup held back citing legal reasons, and Monk believes there was "no real point" in the press call.

"I have seen bits and bobs of what was said, and basically what I took from it was that he couldn't answer most of the questions for legal reasons, so there was no real point in having it," he said.

"If you call a press conference like that, you should be able to say what you want to say.

"It's not my problem, it's between the club and the chairman and the solicitors as it is apparently.

"It was strange as I have never seen a manager lose his job and then two weeks later have a press conference about it but if that's what you choose to do, you choose to do (it).

"It's nothing to do with us. We have to move on."

Swansea take on Napoli in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League round-of-32 tie on Thursday.

Despite the fact his evening ended in frustration, he shared his coach's sense of optimism.

"We had chances to score and I don't like to talk about being unlucky, we need to be more precise," he said.

"The only thing we were missing was the goal, we played well and we prepared well, but it was Atletico who scored in the final minutes.

EAdam Armstrong struck the only goal of the game as Newcastle United secured a narrow victory over Derby County in The FA Youth Cup on Sunday.

The England U17 striker’s fifth goal of this season's competition was enough to seal a quarter-final tie at home to either Cardiff City or Chelsea.

Sergio Aguero is out of Manchester City's Champions League tie with Barcelona tomorrow.

Aguero, who has been missing for three weeks with a hamstring problem, did not train with the City squad at the Etihad Stadium today.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Aguero would not play a part in the first leg of the last 16 tie, but said he could be fit for the visit of Stoke on Saturday.

New Zealand international Rory Fallon has completed a move to League One club Crawley.

The arrival of Juan Mata has not brought the expected bounce to Manchester United as expected. We can’t lay all of this at Mata’s feet though; United have now got back, both Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney and still there is not much improvement.

Many have long believed that David Moyes was the wrong choice to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as manager. But then again, when a legend hand picks you as his successor, it is hard to say no. Moyes can be secure in the fact that he has the backing of Ferguson and as long as Sir Alex is sitting in the owner’s box, a new manager replacing Moyes is very unlikely at this point. So where does United go from here?

Moyes has money to spend but are there any quality players out there that are willing to come to a team that is in a transitional phase or dare we say; Rebuilding! United’s problems at midfield have been written about far and wide. Mata was brought in to fill the central midfielder role but Moyes continues to play him on the wing and drop Rooney back into that position. If United have one thing, it is an over abundance of wingers, so why is Mata playing out there?

If rumors are true, United are expected to be cleaning house this summer but will they be able to find the quality to replace those players that will be off loaded. It is not only house cleaning that is to take place but rumors are coming fast and furious that the before mentioned Van Persie and Javier Hernandez are looking to move away. But are they the only ones?

The back line is in shambles with no one person standing up and taking charge. Nemanja Vidic has already said he will be moving this summer and Rio Ferdinand is nothing more than a bit player at this point of his career. Patrice Evra has been rumored to also be on the move and Jonny Evans is not the world class player that a team like United can put in charge at the back. That leaves us with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

Just a couple years ago, Jones and Smalling were touted to be the replacements for Vidic and Ferdinand but Jones can’t stay healthy for more than a few fixtures at a time and Smalling has become a utility player filling in just about everywhere.

With teams like Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, to name a few, having the money, prestige and “big name” managers; Does David Moyes have a chance to compete for the top talent? It is safe to say that Moyes will be given another season at the helm of United but if things don’t start to improve, even “the legend” might not be able to save him.

The German keeper is ready to quit Hannover this summer and has reportedly been told he can now leave, prompting more interest from Premier League side Liverpool.

Reports in Germany suggest that Dortmund will not start talks over an extension until Gundogan returns from a long-term back injury.

And, while there are no suggestions presently that the injury could have lasting effects, the German clubs caution has given Real even further reason to look at alternatives.

Toronto FC continue to assemble an extremely impressive squad for the upcoming season, as the Canadian club unveiled Brazilian national team goalkeeper Juilo Cesar as a TFC player on Friday.

Toronto have signed 34-year-old Brazilian star Cesar on loan to help him prepare for the World Cup in his homeland this summer and TFC’s GM Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed the deal will last throughout the 2014 MLS season.

The deal means that Cesar will be playing for Toronto before and after the World Cup, as previously many thought it was just a short-term deal that would see him up in Ontario until May.

Making this move happen is just another indicator that Toronto FC really want an MLS title fast, as this signing is a major coup for the ambitious MLS outfit. Plus, Cesar is delighted to be on board.

“I am really happy to come to Canada, I would like to say thanks to Toronto FC,” Cesar said. “I am really excited to work with my new colleagues at my new club.”

Head coach Ryan Nelsen, who played with Cesar at QPR last season, shared his delight at the signing of Cesar, a two-time World Cup veteran with Brazil and Champions League winner with Italy’s Inter Milan.

“As soon as I got a sniff of bringing in Julio, it didn’t take long for it to register how important it would be to have a man like Julio around our guys, for what he does off the field as well as on the field,” Nelsen said. “His reputation on the field is second to none. He is a winner and a leader.”

Bizarrely the former Inter Milan star has fallen behind Rob Green in QPR’s pecking order between the sticks in England’s second-tier, despite impressing in the R’s woeful relegation from the PL last season. But with the World Cup in his homeland just months away and Cesar only playing once all season for QPR, he needed to sort out a loan deal to play regularly and his ex-teammate Ryan Nelsen has moved swiftly to get Cesar on board for his new-look Toronto outfit.

With the MLS season less than a month away Toronto certainly look like one of the strongest squads in the Eastern conference, as USMNT star Michael Bradley and England international Jermain Defoe have already signed long-term deals in Ontario. Add that to the additions of Brazilian duo Gilberto and Jackson and Canadian star Dwayne De Rosario, and this season promises to be the most eagerly anticipated campaign in TFC’s history.

The only way is up for Toronto, it seems.

The Football Association is bidding to bring the opening game of Euro 2020 to Wembley.

It was already known that the FA was keen to bring the final to England's national football stadium, but the first match also carries high prestige.

FA general secretary Alex Horne told The Times: "On the basis that someone needs to stand up, we have done it.

"It's a big game, the opening game. It would be great for London, for Wembley. I pushed it to UEFA, quietly at the moment, but we are going to make a play for it with our bid."

The UEFA tournament will be staged in cities across Europe, rather than being held in one or two countries as has been the norm.

Istanbul has been widely viewed as the favourite to be awarded the final, with a decision on venues expected to be announced in September of this year.

Horne's focus in the early part of this summer will fall on the World Cup, as England head to Brazil.

Group games against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica could make it difficult for Roy Hodgson's team to go beyond the group stage, but the FA general secretary has firm belief in the manager's ability.

Hodgson signed a four-year contract when appointed in 2012 and Horne is certain the former Fulham and Liverpool manager will be the right man to lead the mission to Euro 2016 in France.

He said: "For me personally, Roy is our manager to France and I'm happy with that, very happy with that. I think he's been brilliant. He's exactly what we hoped for."

Horne insists Hodgson has already achieved a "pass mark" by guiding England through qualifying.

"For me personally, he's done it by getting through that group," said Horne. "We go optimistic that we are going to enjoy it and play well."

Horne also suggested it would be "possible in the next five years" for Wembley to be home to an NFL American football team. The stadium has already staged matches in the NFL season, and is due to hold three matches later this year.

Horne said: "You may see a franchise discussion come up. There is a big question about whether we can house a franchise alongside England in the autumn. That will be really interesting. It would need an owner to do it."

Horne even believes Wembley could stage the highlight of the NFL year.

"Then we can get the Super Bowl," he added. "You don't rule anything out."

David Moyes singled out Rio Ferdinand for special praise after the defender’s second-half display helped earn Manchester United a goalless draw at Arsenal.

The veteran centre-half was brought on at half-time for the concussed Rafael and helped keep the Gunners at bay alongside Nemanja Vidic.

It was just the 35-year-old’s eighth Premier League appearance of the season – but Moyes was delighted by the defender’s performance.
