Atlético looking for luck

Atlético looking for luck

Simeone is open about being a superstitious coach, having in the past admitted that he checked his horoscope before signing a player. He is also prone to repeating dynamics that have worked well previously - something he will again do today.
This afternoon, Atlético will head to the Segovian town of San Rafael for pre-match training until Friday morning, when the team will return to Madrid to catch their plane to Lisbon for the Champions League final.
Their opponents will be Real Madrid, the very same team they went up against on 17th May 2013. On that occasion, they were playing for the Copa del Rey and Atlético also took its pre-match preparations to the Los Angeles Hotel in San Rafael ahead of that final.
It was there, where Atlético also goes for two weeks of intense pre-season training in the summer, that Simeone convinced his players they could win at the Bernabéu. And that is exactly what they did.
But this Atlético are much more than lucky charms and superstitious rituals. One look at their results proves that. Plus the fact they have a shot at becoming the fourteenth team to ever win the Champions League without losing a single game.
Real, incidentally, are not amongst those teams to have achieved that particular feat. The most recent of which are the United of 2007-08, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Barcelona of 2005-06, featuring Ronaldinho and Eto'o.

I never doubted Atletico Madrid, insists Cerezo

The club's president says that he always remained confident that Diego Simeone's men would turn things around at Stamford Bridge, where they beat Chelsea 3-1 on Wednesday

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo says that he never had any doubts that his side would reach the Champions League final at the expense of Chelsea.

Diego Simeone's men fell 1-0 behind after 36 minutes of play when Fernando Torres found the net against his former team but Adrian, Diego Costa and Arda Turan eventually helped Atleti to a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge after drawing the first leg 0-0.

"It's been 40 years since this last happened and on May 24 we're going to be there, ready and raring to go," Cerezo told Marca.

"I did not worry when Chelsea scored the first goal because I was certain we were going to go through.

"I knew we were going to turn it around and that we would qualify."

Atletico resume Primera Division action on Sunday when they take on Levante as they continue their quest for their first domestic title since 1995-96.

They currently hold a four-point lead over second-placed Barcelona with three games to go, while arch-rivals Real Madrid sit third on six points with a game in hand.

United wasting Mata gold, says Silva

David Silva says Manchester United are not getting the best out of Juan Mata.
The Manchester City midfielder will face his Spain team-mate in Tuesday's Manchester derby in their first meeting since Mata became United's £37.1 million club record signing in January.
He is a big admirer of Mata, who was also a colleague in his time at Valencia, but the World Cup winner has had a patchy time at Old Trafford and Silva feels United are wasting a valuable resource.
"They have not managed to bring out the best out in him but he is a very talented player and he will show it," Silva told The Independent
Mata is yet to score for United and has only made two of his eight appearances in a central role, the one he said publicly that he prefers.
He has been played on the wing when both Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have been fit but in the absence of the Dutchman against West Ham on Saturday, he excelled in a 2-0 win.
That dynamic performance has led to discussion that United may play better without Van Persie in the starting line-up.
Mata found himself the subject of similar at Stamford bridge, where he had to battle for a place in the team with Oscar. He won Chelsea's player-of-the-year award in each of his first two seasons at the club but was often omitted from the team after Jose Mourinho took charge last summer.
Silva, who rejected talk of a summer move to Barcelona, said: "He wasn't getting the minutes at Chelsea so it was a good move for him to go to United."

Barca deny Martino exit claims

Martino: Focussed on the job

Barcelona have denied that manager Gerardo Martino has said that he will leave the club at the end of the current campaign.

Martino only joined the club during the off-season after Tito Vilanova resigned from his post as manager in July.

But, news emerged from Spain on Monday evening that the Argentine tactician had informed sporting director Andoni Zubizaretta and President Josep Maria Bartomeu that he wanted out of his two-year deal when the seasom comes to an end.

There was also speculation that Martino would take up the head coach role of the Argentina national side after the World Cup.

However, a Barcelona spokesman denied that this was the case at a press conference regarding the redevelopment of the Camp Nou.

"We categorically deny that Tata or his coaching staff have announced an intention to leave the club," vice president of communications Manel Arroyo said.

"We've talked to him and he's focused on the objectives of the team and the planning for the challenges of next season.

Arroyo did confirm, though, that the 51-year-old does have a clause that would allow him to leave if he wanted to.

"There is a clause in Martino's contract that allows either side to break the contract."

Barcelona-Osasuna Preview: Blaugrana desperate to get title challenge back on track

The Catalans have fallen four points behind Real Madrid after losing three of their past six games in La Liga, meaning they cannot afford to slip up at Camp Nou

Barcelona host Osasuna on Sunday with coach Gerardo Martino under pressure after a couple of disappointing results that have dented their title hopes.

The Catalan club's prospects of retaining their La Liga crown have been significantly damaged after a number of surprising defeats in recent weeks.

Martino's men were stunned 1-0 by last weekend losing to a Real Valladolid side that is battling against relegation and had won just four previous Primera Division matches this campaign.

That shock setback made it three defeats in six league games for Barca, with the other two reverses coming against Valencia and Real Sociedad.

Barca are third in La Liga as a result of their poor form, four points adrift of league leaders and arch rivals Real Madrid.

Valladolid's shock victory over the 22-time Spanish champions has led to scathing criticism of Martino, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny.

However, the Argentine silenced his critics somewhat in midweek with a 2-1 victory over Premier League side Manchester City that saw the Blaugrana progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League 4-1 on aggregate.

Barca will be confident of building on that triumph against an Osasuna side that has lost on all of their last five visits to the Camp Nou in all competitions, conceding 21 goals.

Osasuna did hold Barca to a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture in October, but two consecutive Liga defeats have seen them pulled back into the battle against relegation.

Javi Garcia's side are only three points clear of safety heading into the weekend's fixtures, with 11 games remaining, and could be pulled even further towards the drop with defeat at Barcelona.

However, despite Osasuna's current struggles, striker Oriol Riera, who spent six years as a youngster at Barcelona, is hopeful they can cause problems for their hosts.

"Playing against one of the top three sides is always very difficult, but we're going there keen to make things difficult for them," he told the club's official website.

"We will make their lives difficult. At least, that's what we’ll be trying to do."

Jonathan dos Santos (knee) and Isaac Cuenca (hamstring) are both out for Barcelona, and Martino may elect not to play defender Gerard Pique, who is on the verge of a suspension.

Pique is one booking away from a ban and will miss next weekend's Clasico clash with Real should he receive a yellow card on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Osasuna could welcome back defender Marc Bertran (hamstring), while Sisi (knee) and Miguel de las Cuevas (toe) are still on the sidelines.

Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are both desperate to add the world-class goalscorer to their ranks

VITAL Pellegrini insists Aguero will not be sold this summer

The Argentinian hotshot, who has bagged 29 goals in 30 appearances, has been linked with moves to Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are both desperate to add the world-class goalscorer to their ranks.

The Citizens head to the Nou Camp on Wednesday with a 2-0 deficit to overturn, but Pellegrini insists Aguero won't be distracted by the bright Spanish lights.

"I don't think the idea of Sergio is to leave Manchester City," he said.

"Sergio is very happy here. You never know what can happen in the future, but he is a very important player here.

"Big clubs do not sell their best players and I don't think Sergio will be going anywhere."

The Chilean has also opened up about City's English player crisis, but believes that the club will be able to meet the Premier League's homegrown criteria next season.

 joleon lescott

Joleon Lescott is set to leave on a free transfer this summer as question marks remain over the futures of James Milner, Micah Richards and Jack Rodwell.

However Pellegrini is adamant that fans of the club have nothing to be concerned about.

"It's very difficult to have important English players in every team. They are very expensive and you don't have too many English players.

"All the important teams have English players in their side but, if you want to buy an English player, it is difficult.

"There are English players in all the big teams here. But it is not easy to bring another to Manchester City because who will sell?

"We're in England. I know it is important for English football to have English players in every team.

"We know we have to have a certain amount of English players, so we'll see the way we do the list next year.

"Richards, Rodwell, Milner and (Joe) Hart all have contracts with the club. Only Lescott finishes his contract – maybe he will not continue here."

Paris St-Germain, Barcelona and Monaco to offer huge money for Chelsea playmaker Oscar

PSG to offer £41m for Chelsea star Oscar

Chelsea’s resolve to keep Brazil international Oscar will be tested in the summer by a £41.5million offer from Paris St-Germain.

The Premier League leaders may even be offered nearer £50m if Barcelona and Monaco spark a bidding war by tabling their own offers.

The Daily Telegraph reports that all three clubs, who have serious amounts of cash to spend at the end of the season, are all interested in the South American, tipped to be one of the stars of the forthcoming World Cup.

MORE: Chelsea odds-on for title

It seems unlikely, however, that Jose Mourinho will sell the 22-year-old playmaker, who cost £25m when he was signed from Internacional in July 2012.

Mourinho sent out a clear signal of intent that he wants to build his team around Oscar and Eden Hazard by selling Juan Mata to Manchester United for £37.1m in January, and it is not as if Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is short of money.

Barcelona star blasts critical fans

Barcelona star blasts critical fans

Barcelona defender Dani Alves sent a strong message to some sections of the Barca faithful who have written off their chances to win the La Liga title.
The Brazilian told the media that there was no time to think about today’s 1-0 defeat at strugglers Real Valladolid with the Manchester City match in the Champions League coming up on Wednesday.

“We will fight as long as we still have a chance of winning the league,” Alves told the Spanish media post-match.
“Whoever does not have faith in us can jump off the boat.”
The full-back does not believe the loss rules his side out of the title race, despite the fact that Real Madrid can go four points clear if they beat Levante at the Santiago Bernabeu tomorrow.
“We don’t feel like we’ve lost the league. We got a very negative result for our ambitions but while we still have a chance we will keep fighting,” he added.
The 30-year old also touched on Wednesday’s last-16 second leg, adding: “Now we have a very tough game this coming Wednesday against Manchester City in which, if we fail, we will be eliminated.

Messi claims may back fire on Man City

Claims that Lionel Messi could sign for Man City this summer could back fire on the English club with Barcelona set to make a move for Sergio Aguero.
Madrid based media El Confidencial reported on Wednesday that Manchester City were in initial talks with Lionel Messi's father, Jorge, about a possible £250m move but the Catalan club are keen to extend Messi's deal.
President Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed Messi will become the world's "highest paid player" and that negotiations are ongoing, whilst Barca's number 10 has always reiterated his desire to retire at the club.
Whilst a deal looks unlikely, Barca have reacted by showing interest in Man City forward Sergio Aguero as they look to freshen up their team for next season.
And, [football] direct news understands that Barca will use Messi's friendship with Aguero to entice the Argentine forward to the Nou Camp.
Messi and Aguero go back some way, with Barca's forward being the godfather of Aguero's son and it is thought Aguero would relish a move back to La Liga.
A source close to the club told us: "Barca remain unsure over Pedro/Alexis. It would be something if Messi had Aguero and Neymar playing either side of him.
"Aguero is a great player, he was with Atletico and I am sure he would love to come back to La Liga one day."
Barcelona are also said to be buoyed by the fact that Aguero's agent has recently moved to the Catalan capital.

Minimum €60m transfer war chest for Barça

Minimum €60m transfer war chest for Barça

Barcelona knows it needs to overhaul its squad in the close season. There will be several departures and up to four players are expected to arrive - one per area of the pitch. This is the state of play ahead of the upcoming meeting between Andoni Zubizarreta and Gerardo Martino, at which they will begin to map out the objectives for next year.
Zubizarreta has been told that he has at least €60 million to spend. What's more, this figure should rise depending on how much the club brings in through offloading players. Javier Faus, Barça's vice-president, confirmed as much on 'Catalunya RĂ dio', stating that there will be "between two and four signings" in the summer.
For the time being, Barcelona has committed €10-12 million to snap up Ter Stegen, though the deal has yet to be made official. That leaves around €50 million unaccounted for, small change if the club has its sights on top-class signings.
As such, any blockbuster arrivals may have to be funded by sales. One player who is considered potentially surplus to requirements and offers some resale value is Dani Alves, but the sticking point is his salary, which prices him out of many clubs' reach.
Another player who could be moved on is Alexis SĂ¡nchez. The Chilean would command a substantial fee, which would make it possible to bring in another forward with very different attributes.

Valladolid are still in the league's dreaded relegation zone. However, they are just three points shy of Almeria,

Pique: Back in training for Barcelona

Valladolid are still in the league's dreaded relegation zone. However, they are just three points shy of Almeria, who face the realistic prospect of losing to Sevilla later in the weekend.

Under normal circumstances Valladolid would have absolutely no chance of beating Barcelona this weekend.

However, this Valladolid team has gained some meaningful momentum in 2014 and lost just once in the last five matches. The La Liga stragglers will also be encouraged by the fact that Barcelona haven't been as clinical as they ought to be this season.

Just last month they were handed a 1-3 drubbing by Real Sociedad, a result which would have created a considerable amount of doubt as the Catalans continue with their difficult title defence.

Valladolid have lost their last five matches against Barcelona and it is quite possible there will be a reversal of fortunes this weekend.

Barcelona defender and captain Carles Puyol, is reportedly unlikely to play this weekend, while Gerard Pique is back in training and recovering well from a calf injury.

In addition Jonathan dos Santos' cruciate ligament injury continues to rule him out of the football action this weekend. Isaac Cuenca is still experiencing hamstring troubles and is only expected to make his return this April.

While the Barcelona team travelling to Valladolid this weekend is not a significantly weaker one, there are notable absentees and the hosts will be well aware of it.

Valladolid do have problems of their own though, as it would appear that Jeffren, who is struggling with a hamstring problem is still likely to miss out on the action this weekend, while Gilberto Garcia is still being monitored daily. Alcatraz, Heinz Barmettler and Victor Perez are all back in training and should be available to play this weekend.

Barcelona poised to make €30 m bid for David Luiz

David Luiz could be a target for Barcelona.

Barcelona to offer €30m for Chelsea defender as a replacement for club legend Carles Puyol, who has confirmed his is quitting the Nou Camp in the summer.

JASON BURT – PUBLISHED 05 MARCH 2014 02:19 PM

Barcelona have renewed their interest in Chelsea’s David Luiz with the confirmation that Carles Puyol will leave the Spanish club this summer.

A bid of €30mis expected for the 26-year-old Brazil international.

Barcelona hope to conclude a deal swiftly before the World Cup finals kick off in June, with Luiz an important figure in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Brazil squad.

Barcelona had a formal bid for Luiz rejected last summer by Chelsea, with manager Jose Mourinho adamant that the defender was not for sale.

Although Luiz is not agitating for a move it is understood that he would be keen to join Barcelona and, given Mourinho’s recruitment plans – he has acquired French central defender Kurt Zouma from Saint-Etienne and holding midfielder Nemanja Matic from Benfica– he may consider selling.

If Luiz were allowed to leave it would be another sign that Mourinho still have faith in Chelsea captain John Terry, 33, who is set to be offered a one-year contact extension.

Barcelona may have to offer far more than €30m, however, to acquire Luiz who was signed by Carlo Ancelotti from Benfica in a deal that was worth £21.5m plus Matic.

Chelsea rejected Barcelona’s advances last summer, insisting that they wanted more than €60m for Luiz in a successful attempt to kill any effort to negotiate.

Barcelona are understood to have offered only just over €23m and while they are planning an increased bid, it may still not be enough to tempt Chelsea, with Mourinho ¬continuing to publicly insist Luiz remains in his plans.

Bayern Munich also showed interest in Luiz, stopping short of making a formal offer, but Barcelona were always front-runners. Should he leave Chelsea Luiz will not remain in the Premier League.

Luiz is regarded as a big ¬personality as well as a good player and is a strong character in the dressing room. There was some frustration with him at Chelsea earlier this season with the sense that he might have been unhappy at not being granted a move to Barcelona.

Puyol, meanwhile, confirmed ¬yesterday that he would be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old Spain international had a contract with Barça until 2016 but has reached an agreement with the club to rescind the final two years of the deal.

Puyol, who has spent his entire career at Barcelona so far and made his first-team debut in 1999, made the announcement at a press conference. He said: “I want to announce that at the end of the season I will no longer be a Barcelona player. There are three months of the season left and I will not give up. I will help the team.”

The fireworks from his little Blue horse analogy and his likening of Manchester City to a Jaguar car have barely died out yet the Special One (or is it the Incredibly Tedious One?) is at it again.

The fireworks from his little Blue horse analogy and his likening of Manchester City to a Jaguar car have barely died out yet the Special One (or is it the Incredibly Tedious One?) is at it again.

This time round, he used a meticulously crafted set of statements to taunt both the Etihad outfit and Catalan giants Barcelona ahead of their cracker of a match on February 18.

The Portuguese described the current Blaugrana side as 'the worst of many, many years,' and challenged the Blues of Manchester to beat them while still maintaining that Barca were the favorites to win the tie. Simply genius, Mourinho.

Take a look at these quotes:
"Of course, by history, Barcelona is the favorite, but this Barcelona, this season, is showing that it is not the same in previous years," he told the Mirror.

"Of course they have (Lionel) Messi, he is special, and they have more than him. But I think this is the worst Barcelona of many, many years—so City have a chance."

The first time you read the quotes it might not appear so, but using these two sentences, both of which started with the word 'of course', the former Los Blancos made himself immune to ridicule regardless of the result of the match and took a dig at both rivals.

Here is why Jose is the ultimate mind trickster:

If Barca had lost the game, Mou's words would still hold as according to him this is the 'worst Barcelona of many, many years' and so, why wouldn't City beat such a side?

As such, he would have denied City their bragging rights while still proving that this Barcelona team were the worst for getting trounced by a team that, although imperious in the EPL, have not shown maturity on the European stage.

And now that Messi and co. ruled on the day? Mou had already made it clear that they were favorites. Pellegrini's men on their part sucked because in spite of having an easy chance, they just couldn't beat the WORST Barcelona of many, many years.

I Don’t Want To Play Barca” – Man City Collossus’ Dismay At CL Draw

Manchester City's Toure fights for the ball with Bayern Munich's Kroos during their Champions League soccer match at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester

Yaya Toure has admitted that Barcelona were the last team he wanted to face in the last 16 of the Champions League, such is his affection for his former club.

Manchester City face a mouth-watering clash with the Catalan giants in their first appearance in the knockout round Europe’s premier club competition, with many people tipping the English side to topple their more illustrious opponents.

Toure however is not looking forward to taking on Barcelona however, after enjoying three fine years at the Nou Camp, winning everything there was to win before his £24million move to the Etihad.

Toure told reporters: “It’s difficult because I really don’t want to play Barcelona.

“It’s a club I have a lot of respect for, a club which taught me a lot and where I have many friends who helped me.

“I will play against these guys at the Camp Nou. It’s the stadium where I always wanted to play and now I’ll be coming back wearing a different shirt.

“I didn’t want to play in front of the fans who gave me so much love and respected me, but that’s football.

“It will be a great match against a great club with exceptional history.

“We have a great desire to show our fans and everyone else that City are right on track.”

Newcastle Jets coach Clayton Zane has challenged the attitude of his players after Sunday afternoon's 3-2

Newcastle Jets coach Clayton Zane has challenged the attitude of his players after Sunday afternoon's 3-2 loss to the Wellington Phoenix at Hunter Stadium.
The Jets were outplayed and out-enthused by the visiting Phoenix team who had the upper hand throughout the match and deserved to earn all three points.
First-half goals to imports Carlos Hernandez and Stein Huysegems were cancelled out by a brace from Craig Goodwin either side of half-time before youngster Jason Hicks snared the winner midway through the second half.
"Players get paid good money. Coaches get paid good money and you need to turn up. This is what you are paid to do," a disappointed Zane said after the match.
“It is a big lesson to us and it is a hard one to take because this game was very important for us to get on the road to make the six.
"There is still nine matches left, but if we can't get something out of this match, then questioned have to be asked of players and staff.
"I said to the boys at half-time, we are the ones who need to create the atmosphere . You can't turn up to the ground and expect the fans to lead the way. It starts on the park.
"We were just so slow out of the blocks, which based on our training I never thought would happen.
"To be fair to us we got back to 2-2 and I thought we got back control of the game again.
"But they (Phoenix) have some cleverness in the front third and it was always going to be a difficult one trying to control them. They are in such good and are a hard-working team, so credit to them.”
To their credit the Jets kept themselves in the contest courtesy of two great goals from Goodwin, but they were also guilty of making fundamental errors in critical areas that handed the match to Wellington.
“Unforced errors as you would call them, turning the ball over, you can't do at this level,” Zane said.
“We needed to be tidy with our passing, which is something we are usually quite good at. Today, there was way too many of them (errors). If you look at the stats you'll find you can't win of you keep turning the ball over in key areas.”
The Jets coach, who is just three matches into his senior career, indicated he will be looking at changing the line-up heading into next week's fixture with league-leading Roar in Brisbane.
"(Andrew) Hoole is suspended so that forces a change, Emile (Heskey) comes back in the picture next week, Nick Ward might not be ready for next week, so there are some changes already," he said.
"We need hungry players out there now, that is the bare minimum. It is not about who is best striker of the ball, not who is cleverest in the final third, now we need to have the mentality of the teams we played in the last three weeks; Central Coast, Wanderers and Phoenix.
"I need to manage the situation carefully. I need to make sure the players have belief. But at the same time we, as a group, staff including, need to realise the only thing that is going to get us out of this situation is hard work. If the team wants to be involved in the finals fixtures, that is the minimum requirement."
"It was a home match. We need to be a lot better on our home matches," added Zane.
"The good thing is in two weeks time we have Sydney here and we will be looking for 11 brave people to walk out there and show the fans that (performance) is not going to happen ever week."
