Tottenham Mean Business: Three Reasons Why Spurs Can Pick Apart Benfica

Emmanuel Adebayor is in amongst the goals

The Europa League isn’t exactly the competition everyone dreams of at the beginning of the season but you could be forgiven for casting an envious eye over Tottenham Hotspur’s run in Europe’s second most important trophy.

A tie against Portuguese giants Benfica is exactly the sort of game you could quite easily find in the Champions League and one that screams “away day trip” for the second leg of the match.

For the first leg at White Hart Lane there’s every reason for Spurs’ fans to be confident their side can defeat Jorge Jesus’ men and here’s three of the main reasons why.

The fireworks from his little Blue horse analogy and his likening of Manchester City to a Jaguar car have barely died out yet the Special One (or is it the Incredibly Tedious One?) is at it again.

The fireworks from his little Blue horse analogy and his likening of Manchester City to a Jaguar car have barely died out yet the Special One (or is it the Incredibly Tedious One?) is at it again.

This time round, he used a meticulously crafted set of statements to taunt both the Etihad outfit and Catalan giants Barcelona ahead of their cracker of a match on February 18.

The Portuguese described the current Blaugrana side as 'the worst of many, many years,' and challenged the Blues of Manchester to beat them while still maintaining that Barca were the favorites to win the tie. Simply genius, Mourinho.

Take a look at these quotes:
"Of course, by history, Barcelona is the favorite, but this Barcelona, this season, is showing that it is not the same in previous years," he told the Mirror.

"Of course they have (Lionel) Messi, he is special, and they have more than him. But I think this is the worst Barcelona of many, many years—so City have a chance."

The first time you read the quotes it might not appear so, but using these two sentences, both of which started with the word 'of course', the former Los Blancos made himself immune to ridicule regardless of the result of the match and took a dig at both rivals.

Here is why Jose is the ultimate mind trickster:

If Barca had lost the game, Mou's words would still hold as according to him this is the 'worst Barcelona of many, many years' and so, why wouldn't City beat such a side?

As such, he would have denied City their bragging rights while still proving that this Barcelona team were the worst for getting trounced by a team that, although imperious in the EPL, have not shown maturity on the European stage.

And now that Messi and co. ruled on the day? Mou had already made it clear that they were favorites. Pellegrini's men on their part sucked because in spite of having an easy chance, they just couldn't beat the WORST Barcelona of many, many years.
