Nottingham Forest are refusing to rule out further attacking additions, but may have to free up space in their squad first.

Having identified that the acquisition of proven marksmen had to be a top priority this summer, Forest have moved quickly to dip into the early-summer market.

Matty Fryatt has been snapped up on a free transfer at the end of his contract at Hull City, while a calculated risk has been taken on Dutch forward Lars Veldwijk on the back of his efforts for Excelsior.

With the likes of Dexter Blackstock, Simon Cox, Darius Henderson, Rafik Djebbour, Jamie Mackie and Jamie Paterson also on the books at the City Ground, Forest are now well-stocked in the attacking department.

It is, however, an area that will be continually assessed, with it possible that incoming boss Stuart Pearce will open exit and arrivals doors before the summer window closes.

First-team coach Brian Eastick told the Evening Post when pressed on whether Forest would be chasing another frontman: “That is a question for Stuart, really, but what I would say is that is an area where no manager can ever have enough options, within his squad.

“Much may depend on what happens during the pre-season period, when it comes to other players moving on.

“I am not saying for definite that we will definitely bring in another player in the forward area.

“But, if a player became available, who Stuart felt would give the team an advantage, I am sure we would consider it.”

Forest have also tied up permanent deals for David Vaughan and Danny Fox, with the pair having taken in loan spells on Trentside last season, but Eastick insists there is no rush for business to be completed.

He added: “No, it’s not about the timing of the signings, it is about the quality of the signings for us.

“In an ideal world, you have your squad completely put together for the start of pre-season. But that very rarely happens.

“Stuart is delighted with the work we have done so far. We just wanted to get the right men.”

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is reportedly set to be named as David Moyes's permanent successor as United manager next week following Giggs's spell in temporary charge.

During that time, United have won two and lost one of their three matches under the veteran Welsh midfielder, with victories against Norwich City and Hull City coming either side of a home defeat to Sunderland.

The trip to St Mary's for United's last game of a traumatic campaign also marks the final appearance of Nemanja Vidic, the club captain who will join Inter Milan in the close-season, while fellow veteran defenders Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand are also coming to the end of their contracts and Giggs may be on the way out too.

The 40-year-old has only started six Premier League games this season and he remains uncertain if he will play on or go into management elsewhere if there is no room for him in Van Gaal's plans at Old Trafford.

"I don't know, my stance hasn't changed," Giggs said when asked if he would retire.

"I am going to take a holiday as soon as the season finishes and discuss with family and friends what to do next.

"My priorities are Southampton and getting ready for that. It is not something I am thinking too much about.

"It is a tough game and it is their last home game and just like we tried to do, we tried to end it on a high. It is going to be a tough game but one I am looking forward to."

While Giggs could be saying farewell to United on Sunday, the match may also offer a glimpse into the future.

Asked about Southampton's England internationals Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, who have been linked with moves to United, Giggs added: "They are exciting players.

"Lallana has been about for a bit, been at the club right through the different leagues. Luke Shaw has come to the fore this year and done really well."

Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones are set to miss the match with respective groin and shoulder injuries, but Giggs maintains they will be fit to feature in the World Cup for England.

Giggs is refusing to give up on a place in the Europa League despite United needing Tottenham Hotspur to lose at home to Aston Villa to give them a chance of finishing sixth.

United trail Spurs by three points but their goal difference is far superior.

Giggs added: "That was the disappointing thing about losing to Sunderland. We had seen Tottenham get beat so it would have been in our hands. I maintain my stance, we want to be in Europe."

Like Lallana and Shaw, the future of Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has been questioned with the Argentine linked with a move to Tottenham.

Pochettino's success in keeping his side in the top half of the table for almost all the campaign has won admirers, but the manager insists there will be no distraction when Saints wrap up their campaign.

"I don't think it would be wise for us to get ahead of ourselves right now," he said.

"I think we just need to focus on the amazing season that we've had.

"There really is nothing to decide. I still have one more year on my contract and I really haven't spoken about it.

"I don't really get it because it hasn't come from me, these rumours have come from outside.

"We've achieved the best season in the Premier League in the history of this football club so I think that translates as not being distracted at all by these rumours."

The Citizens have seen their stellar season take some bitter blows in recent weeks, having gone down 4-1 on aggregate against Barcelona in the Champions League while also losing their FA Cup quarter-final against Championship side Wigan.

Manuel Pellegrini's men did, however, manage to lift the Capital One Cup in that time following the 3-1 Wembley win over Sunderland at the beginning of March, and the manager will now be looking to make the most of their three games in hand over leaders Chelsea.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are enjoying a decent run of form, having lost just one of their last five matches in all competitions, while they most recently booked their place in the FA Cup semi-final thanks to a 3-0 win over the Black Cats.

Their league form, though, leaves much to be desired, with Steve Bruce's side having won just two of their last nine, leaving themselves only five points clear of the relegation zone but having played a game more than 18th.

On the team front, Hull will hand a late fitness test to Jake Livermore (thigh), although Robbie Brady, Joe Dudgeon and Paul McShane remain long-term absentees.

Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic, though, are expected to return to the squad, having been cup-tied against Sunderland.

For City, Sergio Aguero suffered another injury setback and misses the match with a hamstring strain, meaning Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo are likely to lead the line up front.

Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis, meanwhile, are eligible to play as their respective bans are only in European competition.
