Second-half goals from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas secured City’s first league cup since 1976 after Fabio Borini had given Sunderland a first-half lead.

To keep their quadruple hopes alive, City must overcome FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic in next Sunday’s quarter-final before preparing for the more daunting task of overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in the Champions League round of 16 three days later.

But with one trophy now on its way to City’s cabinet, Pellegrini believes the success can propel his team towards even greater achievements.

“This will give us a lot of confidence now,” Pellegrini said. “If you try to win a title and don’t do it, your mind does not work the same way, so to win the first is very important.

“We have won this trophy and we are now the only club with a chance to win all the competitions.

“For a club like Manchester City, to fail is not acceptable. The team failed last year, but we did not fail today.

“I believe we are going to have a great season when the season ends in May.

"We won one trophy today, but nobody can think that is enough.

“We can improve, but with important players, you can never be satisfied with one trophy and if we beat Wigan next week, we will be back at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final.

“We are going to try. It is not easy, we have all due respect for Wigan after what happened last season in the FA Cup Final, but we are going to try to do it of course.”

Pellegrini’s bullish appraisal of City’s prospects for the remainder of the season was echoed by Nasri, the French midfielder, who claimed his first Wembley winners’ medal after losing in previous cup finals with City and Arsenal.

Nasri, who received the Alan Hardaker man of the match trophy at the end of the game, said, “I am very happy and I hope that this cup can bring some others.

“I have lost my two finals I have played here so it was really important to win.

We're in it! Steven Gerrard sounds Liverpool's title charge

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are in the title race

Gerrard's side went into second place in the Premier League after an impressive 3-0 victory at Southampton.

With Arsenal slipping up at Stoke and Manchester City playing in the Capital One Cup final, Liverpool are now just four points behind leaders Chelsea.

And Gerrard has admitted that the Reds are in the title race, echoing the sentiments of the away fans who chanted: 'We're going to win the league', at St Mary's.

"Well, I think it's very nice that people are talking about us and we are in the title race - there's no getting away from that," said the Liverpool captan. "We're in it.

"But it's important that we stay calm, keep taking it game by game and try to win as many as we can.

"Man City and Chelsea are still the favourites if you like because they've got that experience of going to win it.

"But I think they both know, listening to Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini, that we are a big threat because we've got no Europe and we can be fresh every game.

"It does suit us at the moment being underdogs. What suits us as well is that we've got a lot of time to prepare.

"We've worked on this formation all week. We chose to play a diamond and I think it shocked Southampton.

"We broke, played on the counter-attack superbly well and could have got more goals."

It’s fair to say that Conservative MP Robert Halfon is now on the shit-list of Sunderland fans.

Halfon, the 44-year-old Member of Parliament for Harlow, slammed Sunderland fans on Twitter on Saturday night having turned up in Covent Garden to see the aftermath of 1000s of Black Cats partying in the streets before the Capital One Cup final.

Shocked at the mess in the streets left by the Sunderland supporters, Halfon took to Twitter to bark:

Went to London for dinner. Wish I hadn’t. Scumbag football hooligans turn Covent Garden into a disgusting Cesspit.

The MP also took a picture of the rubbish lining the streets of London as evidence of the bad behaviour of the Sunderland fans.
