English get 'serious' and consider 'blanket' football betting ban

Greg Dyke FA

March 11 - English football authorities are considering a blanket ban for all players and officials - including club, league and federation officials in the football business - on betting on matches after yet another Premier League player admitted breaking current rules.

Newcastle United's Dan Gosling, who has just returned to the club after a loan spell, has admitted a Football Association misconduct charge and Football Association chairman Greg Dyke told the BBC: "No final decision has been made, but it [a complete ban] is one of the things that's being discussed."

"The FA is looking again at the whole of betting and who should be allowed to bet on football in the football industry. In the next few weeks, we'll come out with a policy."

Currently the rules state that a player "shall not bet, either directly or indirectly" on matches involving themselves or their team as well as the competition they play in or have played in.

In addition, players are prohibited from betting in "any other matter concerning or related to any club participating in any league competition that the participant is participating in or has participated in during that season".

The FA has said Gosling's charge relates to "multiple breaches" and that the 24-year-old midfielder has requested a personal hearing to answer his case.

England winger Andros Townsend of Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke striker Cameron Jerome, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace, both received fines last year for breaking the regulations. However, reports said neither player was charged over bets relating to games in which they or their clubs were involved.

Managers and club officials have also sporadically fallen foul of the rules and Dyke added: "Perhaps the answer is to ban all betting on football for anyone who's involved in football. We've got to take it more seriously and do a bigger education programme among players and the rest of the staff in football.

"I don't think anyone knows how bad it is, because unless we find it or someone else finds it and it is brought to our attention, we don't know."

The FA should throw the book at Alan Pardew to end the media circus

The FA should throw the book at Alan Pardew to end the media circus

Newcastle United owner and Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley can expect a windfall of free advertising this week as Magpies manager Alan Pardew will face an FA firing squad for his touchline tête-à-tête.

Television cameras caught the technical area action from multiple angles but the bad tempered manager still had to formally accept his charge of improper conduct.

Pardew has requested a personal hearing, not surprising bearing in mind his long list of previous misdemeanours, and will be represented by a top barrister.

The manager’s attempt to throw money at a QC barrister in a bid to avoid a heavier sentence doesn’t exactly reinforce the remorseful figure seen apologising for the loss of control in the wake of the Hull game.

Whatever happens it will have been an expensive fortnight for the forthright Magpies manager following his £100,000 fine from the club hours after the full time whistle.

It is claimed the club will stand by Pardew regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s trial but it will be interesting to see, firstly, what punishment the FA deem appropriate and what impact that will have on Newcastle United.

Pardew’s unprecedented behaviour is likely to see him hit an equally exceptional sentence and the case is already being treated as ‘non standard’.

A touchline ban doesn’t really seem appropriate as Pardew will still be able to prepare the team for any upcoming fixtures and no doubt communicate with his assistant from the stands. It certainly won’t hit the Toon as hard as losing a key player for any period of time would.

Arsenal FC progress through to the semi-final of the FA Cup as Olivier Giroud’s brace sinks Everton FC at the Emirates

Giroud will hope Boruc makes another mistake like the one he capitalised on in the reverse fixture

.Arsenal FC progress through to the semi-final of the FA Cup as Olivier Giroud’s brace sinks Everton FC at the Emirates

The FA Cup has added importance for Arsenal now following their faltering title challenge and the uphill task that awaits them against Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie, and they took a giant step in attaining cup glory once more as they defeated Everton in an entertaining encounter.
The Gunners have now knocked out Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Everton on their way to Wembley and Manchester City seems to be the only possible stumbling block in their effort to end their trophy drought. This was also a decent run in this tournament for Everton and now they must look to consolidate their place in the top seven of the Premier League.
The Gunners, who were under tremendous pressure to perform in this match following their disappointing loss at the hands of Stoke City in the last game, got off to a flying start as Santi Cazorla set up Mesut Ozil and the German international produced a quality finish past Joel Robles to provide the home side with the lead. This was an important goal for the midfielder who has received a lot of criticism recently.
Both the sides looked dangerous in attack as the match opened up. Finally it was Everton who scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute of the game as Romelu Lukaku scored his second goal in as many games since returning from injury. Arsenal were exposed on the break and Ross Barley produced a wonderful pass from the right wing towards to pick out Kevin Mirallas at the far post. The Belgium international set up Lukaku in front of an empty net with a cut back and the on loan Chelsea striker could hardly miss from there.
In the second half Arsenal took the lead once again as Gareth Barry brought down Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the box and Mikel Arteta converted the resultant penalty kick. But the Spaniard was asked to retake the spot-kick after Olivier Giroud was yellow carded for encroachment in the box before the kick was taken. But the former Everton man kept his calm once again and fired the ball into the top corner of the net to provide the lead back to the home side.
Giroud, who came on as a substitute in the second half, then scored a brace to put the game beyond doubts. The first of which arrived in the 83rd minute after Bacary Sagna picked him up with an accurate cut back from the by-line and the Frenchman provided the finishing touch at the near post. The second was created by two wonderful passes, first by Tomas Rosicky and then by Mesut Ozil to set up the striker, who sided footed the ball into the net. The score line in the end did seem to be a bit flattering as Everton missed a lot of chances of their own, but this win could be a massive confidence boost for the Gunners at this point of the season.
Arsene Wenger has hoped that this result can propel his side to greater things as they travel to Bayern Munich with a tough job at hand.
“It was important for us to win, to put us in a good mind on the psychological front. We can be inspired by our focus on the day, by our desire and go to Bayern with the same spirit.
“The statistics go against us when we go to Bayern, but let’s make sure that the performance goes for us. Then we have a chance.

Wenger was also relieved to see Mesut Ozil producing a good performance in this game and insisted that he looked physically “regenerated” after his recent breaks.
“Of course it’s important for him he took his chance because sometimes you want him to take the chance because he always looks for the good pass.
“I hope that will encourage him. What I liked with him is that physically he looked regenerated, having more power in his runs.
“As well I liked that he did a lot of dirty work for a player like him, that means he tracked back in the first half – especially on the counter attack he came back with long runs.
“When he behaves like that of course you have a better chance to win the game.” – He added.

EAdam Armstrong struck the only goal of the game as Newcastle United secured a narrow victory over Derby County in The FA Youth Cup on Sunday.

EAdam Armstrong struck the only goal of the game as Newcastle United secured a narrow victory over Derby County in The FA Youth Cup on Sunday.

The England U17 striker’s fifth goal of this season's competition was enough to seal a quarter-final tie at home to either Cardiff City or Chelsea.

A first half of few chances was marred by a clash of heads between Mason Bennett and Olivier Kemen, which resulted in the former being stretchered off.

“Buzzing to beat Derby 1-0 and glad to grab the goal! Away fans were quality too!! Can’t wait for the next round now.”

@AdamArma9 Newcastle United striker

United had to wait until the hour mark before they found a breakthrough, as goalkeeper Freddie Woodman’s long kick fell to Armstrong, who proceeded to dummie past a defender before finishing superbly as he continued his record of scoring in every match of his club’s Youth Cup run.

Following the victory, Dave Watson insisted that Adam Armstrong's moment of magic to win the tie was "world class."

Armstrong – who has caught the eye of Alan Pardew with his exploits this season and been named on the bench for three of the first-team’s matches – told of his delight at the result on Twitter.

He tweeted: “Buzzing to beat derby 1-0 and glad to grab the goal! Away fans were quality to!! Can’t wait for the next round now.” (sic)

Their opponents will be decided on Tuesday, when Cardiff face Chelsea, kick-off 7.05pm.

Nottingham Forest see their Wembley dreams go up in smoke yet again

Forest's Wembley dreams go up in smoke yet again

While they were leading 1-0 at a Sheffield United side that had posed virtually no threat during the first half of yesterday’s FA Cup fifth round tie, news filtered through that a home draw with Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton awaited the winners in the sixth round.

No disrespect to any of those sides but suddenly a Wembley semi-final became more than a possibility.

Then, in trademark Forest fashion, those dreams were brought crashing back down to earth by a Blades team managed by Reds legend Nigel Clough.

When Nigel was ‘the number nine’ in his dad Brian’s side, Forest fans used to brag about having a season ticket at Wembley, appearing at the famous old stadiums six times in three years and three days, a sequence ended with an uninspiring 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the 1992 League Cup final.

In the 22 years that have passed, QPR and Fulham of are the only other sides in the top two divisions that haven’t played at Wembley at least once – although Rangers visited Cardiff for a play-off final and Fulham lost a Europa League final in Hamburg.

Forest, meanwhile, have found some astonishing ways of snatching failure from the jaws of success.

The Blades started it all off in the 2003 play-off semi finals, over-turning Paul Hart’s Forest who held a 2-0 second half lead at Bramall Lane only to lose 4-3 after extra time.

Forest's Wembley dreams go up in smoke yet again

The most infamous was the 2007 League One play-off semis in which Colin Calderwood’s Reds won 2-0 at Yeovil in the first leg only to contrive to lose 5-2 at home.

They have even managed it twice under Davies, crashing 4-3 at home to Blackpool in 2010 before failing to beat Swansea the following year even though the Welsh side had Neil Taylor sent off in the first minute of the first leg.

Some Forest fans may cruelly refer to the second best goalscorer in their history as ‘Non League Nigel’ but he provided the right motivation yesterday, mentioning the prospect of a Steel City quarter-final during his half-time team talk, and seeing his side come back from 1-0 down to win 3-1.

That’s not a criticism of Davies. The FA Cup may have been treated with contempt by some of his contemporaries but the manager’s desire to take Forest as far as possible in the competition, despite being in the midst of a promotion battle, cannot be questioned.

However, it irked a little after the game when a dignified Davies suggested the Blades’ players wanted it more. That may be so, but since Forest fans went to Wembley, Sheffield United have been there four times, as well as playing in two FA Cup semi-finals at Old Trafford and a play-off in Cardiff.

As Forest took more than 5,000 fans to Sheffield, it may have been more suitable to talk about which set of fans wanted it more.

Having thrown away their Wembley dreams in the cup, the best way Forest can ease their fans’ latest disappointment would be to avoid the play-offs – and a possible trip to Wembley – by winning automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick had no excuses for his team's performance in their 5-0 drubbing to Melbourne Heart.

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick had no excuses for his team's performance in their 5-0 drubbing to Melbourne Heart.

The heavy loss left the Phoenix outside the A-League's top six playoff places and ended a run of good performances that had seen them win six of their past eight matches.

Wellington were off the pace from the start at Westpac Stadium on Sunday and the Heart made the most of the home side's lacklustre display with David Williams scoring a hat-trick after Dutch midfielder Orlando Engelaar fired home an early goal.

Glen Moss's misfortune which saw Robbie Wielaert's 54th minute strike come back off the crossbar and rebound into the goal off the Phoenix keeper's back summed up Wellington's sorry day.

"It was one of those days where everyone had an off day. So the whole team performed very poorly," said Merrick who couldn't remember ever suffering a 5-0 defeat as a coach before.

"Nothing went right. We couldn't get our passing game together. Great credit to the Heart they closed us down. They shut down Carlos (Hernandez). They stopped our midfield and they hit some terrific goals."

Hernandez was industrious throughout the match but couldn't shake the attention of Patrick Gerhardt to really create anything.

Leading goal-scorer Stein Huysegems was also well-marshalled by Jason Hoffman, while Melbourne keeper Andrew Redmayne was equal to everything sent his way.

While Moss could do nothing to stop Engelaar's thunderbolt strike in the ninth minute he was completely out of position on the edge of his area when Williams lobbed him to open his account on 19 minutes.

The Heart striker's second at the start of the second half came on the counter-attack after the Phoenix lost possession in midfield and it was that goal that really broke the home side.

"After that we really struggled," conceded Merrick. Wielaert added the fourth with Moss' assistance just minutes later before Williams rounded off an impressive performance with a lovely curling shot that deflected in off the post.

Merrick refused to use the absence of injured midfielder Albert Riera as an excuse, but the Spaniard was sorely missed.

The Phoenix are also without Paul Ifill (Achilles) and Louis Fenton (shoulder) for the season.

"Injuries have taken their toll but that doesn't allow you to get beaten 5-0," said Merrick.

"That's not a good excuse whatsoever. There are no excuses. We played very poor football."

Heart coach John van 't Schip had plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The win broke a 22-away game winless streak and was his side's first success on New Zealand soil.

"If you can win in Wellington in what I think is one of the most difficult games to win for an away team... this result is good," he said.

Arsene Wenger used his pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool FA Cup game to give updates

Cazorla Corner

Arsene Wenger used his pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool FA Cup game to give updates on player fitness and his thoughts on the title race.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Mathieu Flamini will return to the side for the FA Cup game against Liverpool this weekend.

The Frenchman also revealed that key midfielder Santi Cazorla will be unavailable through injury but should return to the side for the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich next week.

“We have no Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla so Flamini is very welcome back,” said the Frenchman.

Wenger refused to admit to the press that he was using the game against Liverpool as a chance to try out some fringe players, resting key stars for next week revealing that he hasn’t made his mind up on team selection just yet.

“I will play a team with a good chance to qualify. Will I rest one or two players? I don't know yet. You want an opportunity to put things right and we have that opportunity on Sunday,” he added.

Wenger also revealed that the drubbing Liverpool handed the Gunners last weekend makes them the first team that he wants to face while suggesting that Chelsea were the side with everything to lose in the Premier League
