Arsenal favourites to sign Sanchez and Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin

Reports in France have suggested that the Gunners are leading the race for the duo, despite competition from some of their Premier League rivals. Sanchez has been linked with Liverpool in recent days, but a bid of £32m could see the Barcelona man move to North London.

Sanchez scored 19 goals in La Liga this season, but his future has come under question since the appointment of Luis Enrique as Barcelona’s new manager. He is currently on his way back from the World Cup after his Chile side were beaten on penalties by Brazil on Saturday.

Schneiderlin, meanwhile, is still in Brazil representing France, for whom he earned his first cap on Wednesday in the goalless draw with Ecuador at the Maracana. There have been reports in recent weeks that he could be set to join former boss Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, but it appears that Arsenal have overtaken their North London rivals in their pursuit.

Schneiderlin, who has played in each of the top three tiers of English football since moving to the Saints in 2008, recently said that he was hoping to play in more important matches.

Tottenham set to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as new boss

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino looks set to become the new Tottenham manager this week

According to the Guardian, Tottenham are about to appoint Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new boss before the end of this week.

The Argentinian has been continuously linked with the Spurs job since the north London club sacked Tim Sherwood earlier this month.

It looks like Pochettino will be the next Spurs manager, with the 42-year-old now 1/10 to be the next Tottenham boss.

Outstanding

When Southampton sacked popular boss Nigel Adkins and replaced him with a unknown quantity a year and a half ago, there were a lot of questions asked of then chairman Nicola Cortese.

The decision to appoint Pochettino was an inspired one though. Saints finished 14th in Pochettino’s first half season in charge and this season and this season Saints finished in eighth. Pochettino turned Saints into a team that nobody wanted to play.

The former-Espanyol boss introduced a high-pressing, possession based style of football which was effective and easy on the eye. He was also not scared of using the young players that the Saints academy seems to produce on a regular basis.

Stars

If reports are to be believed, Pochettino does not believe that the Saints can push on to the next level, as he thinks the club could cash in on their big players this summer. Captain Adam Lallana was is stellar form last season and earned a place in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Lallana’s form has attracted the interest of some of the clubs further up the Premier League table, with Liverpool heavily linked with the £25million-rated midfield star. Lallana’s Saints and England teammate Luke Shaw had been linked with a £30million move to Manchester United.

That move has now been put in doubt by French full-back Patrice Evra renewing his contract at Old Trafford. However, Chelsea has also been linked with a move for Shaw, with veteran full-back Ashley Cole expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer when his contract expires.

They are not the only Saints players being linked with a summer exit though, as centre-back Dejan Lovren and Morgan Schneiderlin are also both believed to be interesting top four clubs. Pochettino’s exit may just lead to a mass exodus of players from St. Marys as well.

This summer could be a difficult one to be a Southampton fan, as it looks like the club are losing their highly-rated boss and could lose some of their players as well.

Style

Tottenham fans expect their team to play positive attacking football and Pochettino’s style of play could fit in perfectly at Spurs. The players at Tottenham could also fit ideally into the Argentinian’s way of playing football.

Tottenham have a lot of players that are good on the ball. Their squad has certainly been expensively assembled and with the right manager they may be able to start to produce better results.

Promising

Mauricio Pochettino is obviously ambitious and I think it is quite clear that Spurs are better equipped to challenge for the Champions League places next season. Pochettino is one of the most promising up-and-coming bosses in the Premier League.

He has a clear football philosophy and a determination to stick to it. It seems to be a very effective philosophy and if he can transfer that philosophy to a club with the resources of Spurs, then it could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Stability

Tottenham now needs a period of stability. It seemed that last season neither Andre Villas-Boas nor Tim Sherwood were the right man to help Tottenham achieve their objectives. If Tottenham are to be successful they need to find some stability.

However, that means the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and the clubs hierarchy giving the next boss time to get it right. This does not always happen in the Premier League.

If Pochettino is the next Spurs boss, as expected, then the clubs hierarchy needs to allow the Argentinian the time to instil his ideas into his players, if not then Spurs could be in the same predicament in the near future, no nearer to their objective of making the top-four.

Is Mauricio Pochettino the right man to move Tottenham forward?

Suárez optimistic of making World Cup

iol spt may22 Suarez1

Montevideo - Uruguay's star striker Luis Suárez is recuperating after undergoing surgery to repair knee meniscus damage in training and is “doing well” as he fights to get fit for the World Cup, team doctor Alberto Pan said Monday.

The 27-year-old - who is set to clash with Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard as Uruguay has been drawn with England, Italy and Costa Rica, had the surgery late last week after injuring his knee in training on Wednesday.

“It augurs well that things have gone very well following the operation and that he has plenty of optimism right now and a great desire to keep getting better,” Pan told a press conference.

“Today, there is no pain,” added Pan after the Liverpool hitman, a mainstay of the side which reached the semi-finals at the 2010 finals, went under the knife for the injury to his left knee just 23 days before two-times champions Uruguay meet Costa Rica in their group opener ahead of games with England and Italy.

Pan warned even so that “it is still premature to put an exact date on when he will return to normal activity and fitness.

“The first week entails observation, rest and weight training,” said Pan, adding that the medical team would assess things from there.

He added that Suarez, who enjoyed a superlative season in becoming the first Liverpool player to score 30 league goals in a season since Ian Rush 27 years ago, would bounce back as “Luis is an athlete with an exceptional constitution.”

He saluted the striker's “very positive character” and noted that “he has all the basic conditions (required) to make the best of recoveries”.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez stressed he would wait on Suarez's fitness before determining what role he would play at the finals.

“Things with Luis will depend on how things go with his knee. Our main concern is the player's health,” Tabarez told reporters while adding that he hoped “his fitness will permit him to participate.”

David Beckham's hopes of seeing his new Miami football team play at a prime spot at the port of Miami were Tuesday all but blown out of the water in a major setback for the former Manchester United idol.

The ex-Real Madrid and England midfielder wants to build a $250 million state-of-the-art open-air stadium with 25,000 seats for his recently acquired Major League Soccer (MLS) team.

His preferred site, at PortMiami, would have spectacular sweeping views of Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami.

But shipping interests and local authorities have opposed the proposal, fearing it will disrupt port operations.

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday voted against the port site and it looks increasingly likely Beckham will have to settle for another waterfront area nearby that does not share the same impressive view.

Beckham's representatives on Monday admitted the alternative option -- at a pier in congested downtown Miami -- was now the likeliest contender for the stadium.

"It's unfair to keep giving Mr Beckham and his group any hopes that things can happen in a place that has so many negatives," Rebeca Sosa, chair of the local board, said in reference to PortMiami.

The final decision will be put to local voters in a referendum.

The alternative site would be next to the American Airlines Arena where the Miami Heat basketball team plays.

The stadium should be ready to house the as-yet-unnamed team for the 2017-2018 season.

Tottenham youngster Harry Kane has thanked boss Tim Sherwood for handing him opportunities to play for

Youngster thankful for opportunity

Tottenham youngster Harry Kane has thanked boss Tim Sherwood for handing him opportunities to play for the first team this season. Kane has netted four times in 18 appearances for the north London club this term since returning from a loan spell with Championship winners Leicester City. The striker has taken the opportunity with both hands and impressed during the second half of the season for the White Hart Lane outfit. The England Under-21 international insists he hopes that he can continue to get a run in the side next term as he continues to develop. Kane said: "He gave me the chance here. I was training well and looking sharp. "When he was going to play me, he let me know a few days before and I've been able to repay his faith with the goals. "Tim knew what I could do. I have known him for a while and he has seen me score goals before. He has just told me to play my game, be confident and express myself."

Tottenham’s Walker a major doubt for World Cup

England boss Roy Hodgson announces his 23-man selection on Monday, and national team doctors have visited Tottenham to check on Walker’s progress, with the defender having not played since March due to a pelvic injury, and he is already confirmed to miss the club’s final Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa, which takes place on Sunday.

Hodgson must decide whether to take a chance on Walker’s fitness, and Tottenham Head Coach Tim Sherwood admitted that he has missed training throughout the week. “We’ve put it into the hands of the England medical team now, so it’s up to them to assess,” he said.

“I suppose Roy is going to look at the options that he has got and see if he wants to give Kyle that sort of time to get himself ready. But he is obviously a top right-back and one of the best in the country. No. I have no idea when he might be ready to return because I’m just worried about our game on Sunday.”

Should Walker not be risked, Phil Jones or Chris Smalling is likely to act as second-choice right-back in Brazil behind Glen Johnson.

World Cup hosts Brazil have moved up two places to fourth in the Fifa world ranking - their highest position

The 2002 world champions have climbed above Colombia and Uruguay but remain short of top side Spain

World Cup hosts Brazil have moved up two places to fourth in the Fifa world ranking - their highest position in nearly two years - while Spain continue to lead the way ahead of Germany and Portugal.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's men have jumped above South American rivals Colombia and Uruguay into their best spot on the global ladder since July 2011.

Brazil are now the leading team from the Conmebol confederation in the rankings, with Argentina behind Colombia (fifth) and Uruguay (sixth) in seventh.

Switzerland, Euro 2012 runners-up Italy and Greece complete the top 10.

World Cup outsiders such as England (11th), Netherlands (15th) and France (16th) all have to settle for a spot outside the top 10 nations.

Cote d'Ivoire remain the highest placed African country in 21st position, only just ahead of Egypt (24th) and Algeria (25th).

The 2014 World Cup begins on June 12 in Sao Paulo, with the final set of rankings before the tournament set to be released seven days earlier.

Permanent Move Away From Stamford Bridge

Marko Marin

Chelsea winger Marko Marin, who is currently on loan with Sevilla, has hinted that he does not want to return to west London and is happy to stay at the Spanish side on a permanent basis, reports the Daily Star.

The attacking midfielder signed for the Blues from Werder Bremen in a £7 million deal in the summer of 2012 but failed to secure a regular place in Chelsea’s team.

When Jose Mourinho was installed as the new Stamford Bridge boss at the start of this season Marin did not feature in the Portuguese’s plans and was loaned out to the La Liga side in a pursuit of first team football.

However, the 24-year-old has now revealed that he has enjoyed his eight months with Unai Emery’s side and is keen to commit his future to the club if a deal can be agreed by all parties and crucially, he stays fit.

“If both Sevilla and me are happy to stay I can stay here forever.

“We’ll see what happens in the summer. The first is to play, being fit and helping the team in the end of the season and then we will decide.

“If the fans want, Monchi ,(Sevilla’s sporting director), wants and the coach wants, why not?

“But the most important thing is to be fit and play.

“Speaking about a permanent move before that is not worthy because I can’t help the team if I do not play,” he insisted.

The German international’s career stuttered once he arrived in England but he is still relatively young and with a host of attacking talent within Chelsea’s midfield ranks, he is likely to seek opportunities elsewhere to get his career back on track.

The Denmark striker, who will line up against England at Wembley on Wednesday

Bendtner unhappy with bit-part Arsenal role

The Denmark striker, who will line up against England at Wembley on Wednesday, has played a total of 82 minutes in the Premier League this season and has started just once

Nicklas Bendtner says he is not happy with his lack of first-team opportunities at Arsenal.

ARSENAL LATEST
9/1 Nicklas Bendtner is 9/1 with Betway to score first against EnglandBendtner has started just one Premier League match this season and Arsene Wenger has recently elected to play Yaya Sanogo in key FA Cup and Champions League clashes in the absence of Olivier Giroud.

And the Denmark striker, speaking at Wembley ahead of Wednesday's friendly with England, says he is fit and ready to play a part in the title run-in.

"If you find a football player who says he is happy to sit and watch and not play then I think he needs to find another job," he told reporters.

"I want to play, there's no doubt in my mind. I'm ready, I'm fit, I'm training well. That I'm not selected is up to the manager, it's not up to me, if he then chooses differently then that's up to him."

Bendtner could come up against Gunners team-mates Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Wembley, but he does not expect it to be too intense an encounter.

"Yeah it's going to be good fun," he added. "We'll see if we can joke around in the dressing room at half-time, maybe have a laugh about it.

"It's a friendly, there's not a lot at stake, I think a lot of players have played a lot of games... so it's going to be a difficult game for us."

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes he would have "been England

Sol Campbell described as "embarrassing" the appointment of Michael Owen as captain

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes he would have "been England captain for more than 10 years" had he been white.
The 39-year-old, who played 73 times for his country, claims the English Football Association and the majority of fans to not want a black England captain.
Campbell, who three times captained England in friendly matches, also labelled the appointment of Michael Owen as skipper ahead of him as "embarrassing".
In a new authorised biography serialised in the Sunday Times, Campbell said: "I believe if I was white, I would have been England captain for more than 10 years - it's as simple as that.”
"It's alright to have black captains and mixed race in the under-18s and under-21s but not for the full national side" - Sol Campbell
He said he thought the FA "wished I was white. I had the credibility, performance-wise to be captain.
"I was consistently in the heart of the defence and I was a club captain early in my career.
"I don't think it will change because they don't want it to and probably the majority of fans don't want it either.
"It's alright to have black captains and mixed race in the under-18s and under-21s but not for the full national side. There is a ceiling and although no one has ever said it, I believe it's made of glass."
On the appointment of Owen, who wore the armband on eight occasions, he added: "I think the FA didn't want me to have a voice. Owen was a fantastic forward but nowhere near being a captain.
"It was embarrassing.
"I've asked myself many times why I wasn't. I keep coming up with the same answer. It was the colour of my skin."

Petition to ban Cleverley from World Cup gathers pace

Tom Cleverley is the subject of a petition being signed by England supporters calling for the midfielder to be banned from the World Cup squad this summer.
In less than 24 hours, the petition has collected over 4,000 signatures, and set up by Glenn McConnell, it is in place to protect England as a nation in football. The petition argues that the Manchester United player would damage the Three Lions' hopes in Rio in the summer.
It is likely that Cleverley will be selected by England manager Roy Hodgson, and the petition read: "Tom Cleverley, owner of 13 England caps, has been regularly selected by Roy Hodgson in his squads without possessing any genuine qualities whatsoever.
"We believe in the reputation of this proud footballing nation and that he should be prevented from attending this summer's international showcase.
"Whilst England are considered to disappoint at major tournaments, further embarrassment could be avoided by not having his inept performances undermine the rest team's efforts."
In February, Cleverley claimed he had been made a scapegoat for United's poor form this season under David Moyes following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

England coach Roy Hodgson has tipped Manchester United

England coach Roy Hodgson has tipped Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to take over the Three Lions captaincy in the future.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard currently wears the national armband. And while he is in fine form, at 33 years of age the Reds midfielder faces a challenge in making it to Euro 2016.

"Wayne, I'm sure, is a future captain of England because we are losing some of the famous players of the past who have served England so well," Hodgson is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

"Steven Gerrard's playing magnificently for Liverpool and has been a major factor in their season so far, and I wouldn't want to write him off [for Euro 2016] but maybe when the day comes for Gerrard to hang up his boots, Wayne will be straight in there I'm sure."

Hodgson also expressed happiness that Rooney had ended speculation over his career by penning a new five-and-a-half-year contract with United last week.

"I trust Wayne and even if his future hadn't been settled in this way he could have still focused on the World Cup," Hodgson said.

"It must be nice for him to know he's committed the bulk of his best playing years to Manchester United and England, so we're very happy for him and very happy for Manchester United and ourselves as well."

Hodgson given Brazil safety net, The FA insists Roy Hodgson's job will be safe even if England fail to navigate their nightmare World Cup

The FA insists Roy Hodgson's job will be safe even if England fail to navigate their nightmare World Cup group in Brazil this summer.
Hodgson, who has done a "brilliant" job according to FA general secretary Alex Horne, will remain in charge of England until at least 2016.
Horne claims that the FA's sole target for Hodgson was to make it to the World Cup with tough assignments in their bid to qualify against the likes of Ukraine, Poland, Montenegro.
With their place in Brazil sealed, Horne has confirmed that Hodgson will remain in place to try and guide England to the 2016 European Championship in France.
"For me personally, Roy is our manager to France and I'm happy with that, very happy with that," Horne told the Times.
"I think he's been brilliant. He's exactly what we hoped for."
England face a tough task to make it to the knockout stages in Brazil, with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica alongside them in Group D. Asked what he would deem an acceptable showing for England in Brazil, Horne said: "Pass mark? For me, personally, he's done it by getting through that group.
"We go with confidence. We'll prepare well. We go optimistic that we are going to enjoy it and play well. It's not an easy group, it's not an easy tournament.
"Roy stabilised the team and he's qualified us well in a tricky group. He kept his head convincingly, won the last two [against Montenegro and Poland]. I've huge respect for him."

Graham Rowntree expects England's pack to grow even stronger during the Six Nations.

Graham Rowntree: Says there is more to come from England's forwards
There were concerns about the England forwards' physicality after the 30-3 rout by Wales in last year's title decider.

However, an impressive autumn saw England hold their own against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand and they now look to possess a pack that will be feared across the Championship.

Lawes: Discipline will be key
"I'm pleased with how we're progressing, particularly in that last game against New Zealand," said forwards coach Rowntree.

"New Zealand are the best team in the world and we reeled them in to 22-20.

"What I liked was that the blend of our game was good in terms of our set piece and carrying. You must have threats across the field in every fact of the game.

"Towards the end of the game we had a couple of slip ups at the line out which we can't afford to do.

"They're the learnings we take, but I'm happy with the way we're going.

"There's lots more to come. Test level, as I say to the lads, is about doing lots of little things exceptionally well.

"We have to learn to do those for 80 minutes. That's the progression for us and it will come with experience."
